What is ORCID?

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is a nonproprietary alphanumeric number that is used to uniquely identify authors and contributors to academic communication, as well as ORCID's website and services for searching for authors and their bibliographic output.

ORCID aims to provide a persistent code for humans to address the problem that recognizing a specific author's contributions to scholarly communication can be difficult because most personal names are not unique, and thus multiple people with the same name, even from the same institutional department, could contribute to the same scholarly field. Furthermore, names might change (for example, with marriage); there are cultural disparities in name ordering rules; journals utilize first-name abbreviations, name suffixes, and middle initials inconsistently; and journals use various writing systems.
